Joel 3: Reversal

Discussion notes based on the sermon preached the evening of 29-5-22

STUDY MATERIAL

Read the passage (Joel 3) again and don’t forget to start your meeting in prayer.

Particularly ask that the Holy Spirit would guide your discussion and help you to apply what is said in Scripture to your lives today. Sermons are available on the St John’s website or YouTube channel.

Sermon Outline

Introduction: Who would dare pass judgement?

1. Judgement declared (vv. 1-8)

2. The bad news is resistance is futile (vv 9-16a)

3. The good news is Refuge is found in the LORD (vv. 16b-21)

QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION

1. We rightly ask why it is that the arrogant, greedy and violent so often seem to get away with their misdeeds. How does Joel help answer this? (also check out Psalm 73)

2. How does verses 9-16 liken God’s judgment to a harvest? (see also Matthew 13.36-43) How can we help friends/family take this seriously?

3. How does verses 17-21 help us understand the new heaven and the new earth in Revelation 21.1-8?

4. What does the urgency of Joel’s message mean for you on Monday morning?

Prayer:

The 18th century hymn writer William Cowper often found he was in a ‘dry’ place spiritually. Following one of these experiences, he wrote his famous hymn ‘O For a Closer Walk with God’. In the second verse he pleaded with the Lord,

Where is the blessedness I knew,
When first I saw the Lord?
Where is the soul-refreshing view
Of Jesus and his word?

Have you had an experience like this? How did you return to the Lord?
Now pray into this.
