Welcome to St John’s
Welcome to John’s Church, Blackheath. I am so please you have found St John’s; I do hope you feel part of our church family.
I’d like to take a moment to share the background to this:
Jesus tells a story in the gospel of Mark chapter 4 about an unusual farmer. Like any farmer he scatters seed on the ground, it says ‘Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how.’ It’s a strange story! All he does is scatter seed, sleep, get up again, and yet he ends up with a huge harvest! ‘All by itself the soil produces corn – first the stalk, then the ear, then the full grain’. This is what the kingdom of God is like, the success of God’s mission on earth, in Blackheath does not depend on the cleverness of the sower but the power of the seed, the word of God!
We believe at St John’s that if we are faithful in sharing the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God will be faithful to bring new life and produce a harvest beyond our ability or imagination. This is how we want to approach life at St John’s, confident that the word of God is sufficient to accomplish the work of God, because only he can change us, only he can turn us around, only he can bring us to faith in Jesus, only he can grow followers.
We believe at St John’s that our job is simple: to tell people the good news of Jesus Christ, which means we want the Bible and prayer to be central in all we do – in our sermons, in our singing, in our serving, in our love for one another, and especially as we seek together to be a growing church at the heart of the community.
I look forward to seeing you,
