Ephesians 3:1-13

Discussion notes based on the sermon preached the evening of 21-05-23

Read the passage again and don’t forget to start your meeting in prayer.

Particularly ask that the Holy Spirit would guide your discussion and help you to apply what is said in Scripture to your lives today. Sermons are available on the St John’s website or YouTube channel.

Sermon Outline

The Christian life is hard, so rehearse the gospel of God’s grace to yourself and don’t be discouraged when suffering or persecution comes.

Starter: Can you think of times when have you suffered specifically because you were a Christian?

Read Ephesians 3:1-13

  1. Paul uses the word ‘mystery’ a lot. How is this mystery described in these verses? What is the mystery?
  2. How has the gospel changed everything for God’s people now compared to the Old Testament? (see verses 4-6)
  3. What does it make you think knowing that in some ways you are more privileged than people in the Old Testament?
  4. How does Paul explain his role in the mystery of the gospel being revealed? How has that affected his life? (see verses 7-9 and verse 1)
  5. How does this change are expectations of the Christian life and suffering? (Consider how both Jesus and his apostles suffered.)
  6. Looking at verses 10-12, what does God intend to achieve with the gospel?
  7. How does seeing God’s church as his trophy cabinet of grace change the way you approach church? How could you encourage someone else with this?
  8.  How does all this lead us not to be discouraged when we or other Christians suffer for Christ’s sake? Who can you reveal the mystery of the gospel to?

Praise God that by saving his people in the church he is flexing his muscles and showing off his amazing grace.

Pray that you would be encouraged and empowered to keep sharing the news of Christ despite suffering.
