Matthew 21:1-11 – The king comes – Small group notes

Matthew 21:1-11 – The king comes

Discussion notes based on the sermon preached the morning of 10 April 2022 am

STUDY MATERIAL

Read the passage again and don’t forget to start your meeting in prayer.

Particularly ask that the Holy Spirit would guide your discussion and help you to apply what is said in Scripture to your lives today. Sermons are available on the St John’s website or YouTube channel.

QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION

  1. Jesus knows he is going to his death in Jerusalem (see Matt 20:17-19). From Matt 21:1-6, how does Jesus demonstrate his control over the situation and his willingness to die for people?
  2. Read the prophecy in Zechariah 9:1-17. What might the people have expected to happen when God’s chosen King came?
  3. How does Jesus go on to fulfil or subvert these expectations in an unexpected way?
  4. When might our expectations of what Jesus will do for people be wrong?
  5. How can we celebrate Jesus as the King who came to die for sinful people this Easter?

PRAYER

Praise Jesus as the King who came to die in the place of sinful people.

Pray the Spirit would show you Jesus as he really is, not as we would like him to be.
