Jesus comes to challenge

QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION

  • What are the similarities between the 2 events in this passage?
  • What attitude do the Pharisees have towards Jesus?
  • How does Jesus go about challenging them in verses 3-5?
  • What’s the answer to Jesus’s question in verse 9? What does the Pharisees’ silence say about them?
  • In Luke 5:17-26 Jesus heals someone to demonstrate something about himself. What does the healing in these verses prove about Jesus?
  • How is the good news of Jesus incompatible with religious rule-keeping? (What is the good news/gospel?)
  • When are we more like a rule-keeping Pharisee than a disciple of Jesus the Lord?

Prayer

  • Praise God for the liberating good news of Jesus.
  • Pray that we would hold onto Jesus and not any rules we make up for ourselves.
