QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION

  • What attitude did the crowds have as they came to Jesus? What were they looking for?
  • How does their attitude differ to many people’s attitude towards Jesus? What attitude do we have towards Jesus? How might that need to change?
  • Who does Jesus speak to in verses 19-26?
  • What strikes you most about the blessings and woes Jesus speaks? How are they completely opposite of how the world normally thinks?
  • Which ‘Blessed’ statement most encourages you currently? Why?
  • Which ‘Woe’ statement most challenges you currently? Why?
  • What is the time frame for these things? (see verse 23 especially)
  • How does this teach you to long for the day Jesus returns? When do we not long for Jesus’s return? How can we encourage each other to long for it more?

Prayer

  • Praise God that even though life can be hard now it is blessed (and happy) when we follow Jesus.
  • Pray that we would reach out to Jesus in desperation and long for his return to come.
