Hello brothers and sisters,
I have found my patience for the endless rhetoric (at times conflicting!) around lockdown easing, somewhat waning in recent weeks. Perhaps you have too. So much talk, so much information and at times a struggle to find a consistent thread. Can I continue working from home? Can we meet friends indoors as well as outdoors, use their loo, sit round a dining table? Masks – where, and when? Dare I say, even my bible reading occasionally feel like yet more information that needs further study to really grasp the full meaning. And yet this week God in his wonderful graciousness reminded me of these straightforward, uncomplicated, ‘just do it’, commands – “rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstance; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1Thes 5:16-18).
It’s not that these simple words aren’t challenging. They are. They are also impossible without the grace of God and the power of the Holy Spirit. It was so helpful to be reminded that rejoicing isn’t walking around all day with a grin on my face at all the ups and downs of life. It is our response to the redeeming sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. Our rejoicing in the goodness of God’s mercy, has the power to lift the weariness of lockdown, of trying to make ends meet, of working from home, of fighting our cause. Pray constantly – who has time to do nothing but sit and pray all day? None of us and all of us! We are all called to live in the awareness of the presence of God in our lives. That God our Father is, as someone once said, just a ‘prayer away’. It is the Holy Spirit who reminds us how to pray, prompts us to claim God’s promises in Jesus, reminds us of all that Jesus said (John 14:26). And finally, thankfulness. In all circumstances? That’s too tough. And yet as we trust in God’s eternal purposes, in yielding to His sovereignty in all things, the simplicity of thankfulness will surely bubble up. Straightforward commands that can bring profound change to our daily life and certainly helped me reclaim my patience!
Sunday morning online service as usual at 10am. And do join us for Refreshments afterwards. A lot of prayer and effort goes into these services. The Zoom Sunday evening Refresh series is at 6pm. It’s so good to see one other ‘live’, even in our little Zoom boxes! Also, plans for Holiday Club online are moving ahead – hurrah! See Sophie’s link below.
I know many of us are longing to have Sunday services back in Church. Bear with us. There’s much to sort out and Eddie will update. Until then, the church building is open in the mornings. Please be aware in line with Government requirements we now have a track&trace register in place and all visitors must now provide contact details.
Have a good weekend. Stay in touch. Love a chat. Let’s be encouraged to rejoice, pray and give thanks, for all that we have in Christ Jesus, and in one another!
Don’t forget to join us straight after church for our weekly virtual
refreshments. We’d love to see you, catch up & chat.
