“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.” Numbers 6:24-26
In a week of celebration, relief, and for some disappointment and anxiety, teenagers up and down the country have been reframing the next few years of their lives in the light of exam results on Tuesday and Thursday. For many receiving A level grades, the next few months will signal a major step to independence. Whether it’s a job search, a work placement or further education, the transition to adulthood beckons. For their parents, carers, families and friends, that envelope ( yes, paper is still the preferred exam result format!) is a tangible sign that children are now primed to move on and ‘leave home’. At some point they may move permanently to different parts of the UK, even different countries. And so it is in our wider church family, during this summer season of house moves and relocation. A flow of farewells and welcomes as some brothers and sisters in Christ leave us, to find their place in another part of God’s kingdom, and others come, and find with us their new church family. In all these changes, how might we respond? With gratitude, that in Christ Jesus we are one; brothers and sisters of the same heavenly father called to live in Jesus, in whatever situation we find ourselves (1Cor7:17); and to those who leave, we send them off with our love and blessing. So to all our young people making preparations for a new stage of life, and for those of our church family who are on the move, we say, ‘the Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.’
