QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION
- How does Jesus describe himself in verse 1, why might they be specifically important to the church in Laodicea, and how should they affect our relationship with Jesus?
- Looking at verses 15-17, what are Jesus’ criticisms? Why does he not offer any encouragement, unlike the other letters?
- According to the passage, what is their true spiritual condition? How are we to evaluate our spiritual condition?
- How is it possible for churches/individual to become lukewarm and self-satisfied? How can these dangers be avoided?
- Looking at verses 18-20, what are the remedies Jesus offers? What does verse 19 tell us about Jesus’ character and attitude towards his rebuke?
- How can we grow in dependency on God rather than ourselves? Read Matthew 6.21 and then consider: Three simple tests to apply to ourselves: What do you spend time thinking most about? What do you spend time doing most? What do you spend your money on? These reveal what’s most important to us! Is it Jesus?
- What does Jesus want most, verse 20? Why is the image of a meal so important to this? In what ways have we left Jesus outside of our lives?
Closing Question: From the 7 churches, what has challenged you the most?
PRAYER
Spend some time in prayer for each other.
Invite Jesus into every area of your life.
Surrender to him, humble yourself in his presence, and come before his throne of grace.
Ask him to open your eyes to see.
Ask him to help you not be overcome with self-satisfaction.
Ask him to clothe you in white.
