Dear brothers and sisters,
bind them around your neck,
write them on the tablet of your heart.”
If you’re anything like me, your ability to love and be faithful in everyday life goes up and down like a yo-yo! We can easily get so absorbed in our own needs and wants that “love and faithfulness” end up taking a back seat. The uncertainties and stresses of this Covid season only amplify this tendency. No wonder we muck up our friendships, relationships and priorities again and again! When we realise this, what should we do? Is the Christian gospel still “good news” for us in this? Yes, absolutely. The verse above from Proverbs both humbles and encourages us. It humbles us because, yes, love and faithfulness do leave us – frequently! Yet it also encourages us because, in our relationship with Jesus Christ, we are intimately joined in spirit to the one person who does have love faithfulness written on the tablet of his heart – perfectly, eternally, always. It’s by giving thanks to Jesus – and enjoying his love and faithfulness for us, even though we could never deserve it – that we take heart in God’s grace for us, and gain strength to try loving other people again.
Many have asked about the funeral for Brenda Webb – much-loved, long-time member of St John’s who died ten days ago. I can tell you that her funeral will take place this Friday 2nd July at 12:45pm. While we’re glad that it can happen at St John’s, regrettably we’re still only allowed limited numbers inside the church building, therefore only invited family and friends will be able to attend. We realise this will be a disappointment and sadness for many of us. If you would like to write a condolence card or letter to Brenda’s family, you are welcome to post or hand it to the church office so that we can pass them on to the family after the service. Please do continue to pray for comfort for Brenda’s family and for anyone else suffering particular grief at the moment.
Yours in Christ,
