Dear church family
‘… we preach Christ crucified …’ 1 Corinthians 1:23
The cross is back! During the repair work on the church building, the cross on the top of the east end had to be replaced, due to a split in it. As I write, the cherry picker has just come and a nice new cross has appeared – look out for it next time you pass!
We are nearly at Easter and again we come back to the most basic Christian message. By ‘basic’ I don’t mean simplistic. I mean the message that Jesus died on a cross, in our place, so we could be forgiven, and he rose again to bring new life now and forever. Let us never grow weary of the cross, because sin is worse than we think. The good news is better than we imagine. That’s what the world needs to hear, that’s what we need to hear!
Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, and this is our Happy Week. Joy in suffering. Victory in defeat. From darkness into light. We must not shrink back from rejoicing and sharing and savouring the gospel delivered to us as of first importance (1 Corinthians 15:3). It is, after all, the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes (Romans 1:16). The gospel still saves. We have no reason to be ashamed of blood and wrath and death, for without them there can be no cleansing and forgiveness, and life. Let us not tire in proclaiming the same good news to all we meet.
The cross is back!
With love and prayers, Eddie
