‘Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this.’
Did you know that the UK ranks 13th on the Happiest List? According to the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen, Finland is the happiest place followed by Denmark. I even discovered this week that London has its very own Happiness Museum, which asks big questions like ‘Want to bring sustainable happiness into your organisation?’ It seems to me a timely venture given the alarming statistics of depression and anxiety.
The quest for happiness is something we can all identify with, but how to find it?
The Bible reminds us that dissatisfaction of life is rooted in our alienation from God and that the only answer lies in being reconciled to him through the death of Jesus Christ – Good Friday really is happy news for us! This doesn’t mean for a minute that those who trust in Christ are somehow immune to unhappiness – far from it! The Christian recognises that all our joys are touched with pain, that shadows fall on the brightest hour, and the beautiful roses still have thorns – it may be especially the case for some this Mothering Sunday!
Once lockdown eases, a trip to the Museum of Happiness might be fun and prompt us to think, but it cannot fix the problem. For this, we need to begin by declaring again what the scriptures say: before there was time, before there was anything, there was God who created us, not by random chance, but to the end that we might know him, love, serve and delight in him. May the Lord be your delight and your strength as you commit your ways to him.
Grace and peace to you in our Lord Jesus
