“So the church … had peace and was being built up. And walking in fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it multiplied.” – Acts 9:31 (ESV)
Who We Are..
St John’s is part of Christ’s church and it’s through him alone we come together to worship him in all aspects of our lives.
- We are local
- We are evangelical
- We are anglican (C of E)
- We are of all ages
- We are culturally diverse
- We are outward looking
We believe that our personal relationship with God the Father, through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, by the Holy Spirit, is at the heart of who we are, therefore we value…
As the written word of God and our supreme authority and guide in following Jesus in the whole of life.
As the prime expression of faith in Jesus and of our dependence on God’s grace and sovereign power and on the leading of the Spirt.
As a community of wholehearted worshippers and disciples of Jesus Christ committed to loving God and loving others.
These statements do not say every thing about what we value but are ‘core’ to what guides how we do things at St John’s.
We exist to grow disciples of Jesus Christ committed to worshipping God in all aspects of life, especially by:
- Sharing the good news of Jesus Christ [Word ministry]
- Showing love to one another and in our communities [Deed ministry]
St John’s Vision…
Vision – where are we called to go?
Our vision is… to grow the church and deepen our commitment to Jesus Christ.
I believe this incapsulated again the Acts 9.31 passage for us. The twin aspects of ‘multiplication’ and being ‘built up’ that we keep coming back to and are on my heart. That ‘our’ vision emphasise collective responsibility.
To do this by 2022 we are going to:
- Grow in outreach….purposeful sharing of our faith
‘Go and make disciples of all nations…’ (Mt 28.19)
‘Ask the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest field’ (Mt 9.38)
- Grow in discipleship … purposeful building up followers of Jesus
‘…so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ… (Eph. 4.12)
‘…continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him…’ (Col. 2.7)
- Grow the next generation… purposeful nurturing of children and young people
‘One generation will commend your works to another, they will tell of your mighty acts.’ (Psalm 145.4)
‘…to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations for ever and ever. Amen.’ (Eph. 3.21)
